According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association, 65 percent of  US households owned a pet in 2015-2016.  Out of this lot, 37 to 47 percent of households had a dog as a pet. Owning a dog has many benefits. Not only will they help you feel less stressed and depressed, but dog owners are also known to have healthier hearts.

Dogs are a lot of work; they need to be fed, bathed and even taken on walks. In fact, most dog owners feel that walking their dogs is all the exercise they need to be physically active. If you do take your dogs for a walk daily and are unable to head to the gym because of time constraints, do not worry. Walking your dog can be counted towards your 30 minutes of daily exercise.

Dog Walking vs. Gym – A Survey Conducted in the UK

Researchers of this survey found that dog owners get more exercise than those with gym memberships. The sample size was 5,000 UK residents, out of which 3,000 were dog owners. According to the study, 86 percent of dog owners enjoyed taking their dogs out for walks, as opposed to the 16 percent of non-dog owners who said they enjoyed going to the gym. Overall, it was found that people who have dogs were physically active for more time than the people who visited gyms.

Reasons why Dog Walking is better than Hitting the Gym

Some of the reasons why dog walking is more effective than hitting the gym are:

  • Motivation

Even though you may have bought the gym membership, you will need the motivation to visit it each day. There may be days when you are so busy that you have no choice but to skip exercising. As a pet owner, owning a dog is all the motivation that you need to go on a walk. Even when you are feeling sad and tired, the expectant look on your dog’s face will make you put on your shoes and head out. Take your dog for a 30-minute walk daily, and it is sure to improve your physical health.

  • Dedication

Owning a pet brings with it a lot of responsibilities. It is entirely up to you to ensure that all your dog’s needs are met. All it takes is just one look for you to fall in love with your dog. Since you love them, you will be committed to taking care of them – taking your dogs for walks is crucial for their health. Unlike a gym membership, you will not be able to make excuses to skip walking your dog. You wouldn’t want to!

  • Playful and Fun

No matter how committed you are toward getting fit, you cannot say that working on your abs and strengthening your upper body is all fun and games. Even though you may enjoy hitting the gym, you cannot spend hours exercising. When you take your dog for a walk, you get the best of both worlds – you are exercising and having fun at the same time. Watching your dog fooling around during the walk is sure to make you laugh out loud. Don’t forget to check the time now and again because you may not even realize how long it has been!

While going to the gym gives you great results, it is not the only way to get fit and active. Everything around you has the potential to be an opportunity to exercise your body – including walking your dog. And if you really enjoy walking your own dog, you might consider becoming a dog walker or pet sitter. Both are great ways to maximize the health benefits of spending time with animals while also making a buck or two. So, the next time you have an urge to get physically fit and active, skip the gym membership and take a dog–whether it’s yours or someone else’s–for a walk, instead.
